Assault is a serious charge and when combined with “battery” can carry a substantial sentence. If you are charged with threatening harm to someone (physical or verbal), you could receive a jail sentence or fine or both. If the charge includes battery (you followed your assault threat by physically assaulting, and possibly injuring, the other person), the sentence could double. If the assault and battery occurred against a spouse, girlfriend, boyfriend or relative in the household, it is called domestic violence and carries even stiffer penalties.
